'Zara has the look of a sports horse but a steady, Irish temperment'
Zara has hunted in Ireland for five seasons. She is very well bred with Cruising and Chairlift bloodlines. We have had Zara for nearly a year now and through our time with her we feel that with her calm and sensible outlook she would excell in Dressage, Endurance, Hacking, Showing or Hunter trials.
Sire Bahrain Cruise Dam Derha Shamrock
Wherever she goes, whether its hunting or dressage, her temperment and manners are impeccable. Out of all the horses we have had Zara has the same calm attitude no matter what the situation. To look at her you would class her as a sports horse, she has the look and the breeding but a very laid back Irish attitude making her into a little lady.
She enjoys cross country but does not have the talent or technique of a Belvoir Saturday hunter. Likewise, she wouldn't be suited for showjumping. Therefore, in the honest way that we sell our horses, she would be a lovely horse for someone to further her education on the flat for dressage and take up the levels or for someone who just wants to hack this little lady and enjoy fun rides and hunter trials on a safe, well-mannered, good looking horse.
Please take a look at her diary and videos below.
Zara's Videos:
Below are videos of Zara from various outings and working at home etc.
Zara's Diary
Follow Zara's diary to find out how she has been getting on. I try and update the diaries as often as possible as well as the videos. This diary will give you a better insight to Zara and what she's like.

I hope this Diary of Zara has given you a positive insight to who Zara is. I know we write about her negatives as well but if we didn't you would have a wasted journey coming to try her. I think her positive side will make someone a very happy customer knowing what is under you is very reasurring when you take your new horse home.

I recently took Zara to Arena UK Dressage. She warmed up calmly in the warm up ring and produced a nice test. She is a very classy looking horse who will give someone a lot of fun and goals to work towards.

Over the last few weeks, Zara has been hacked, schooled and hunted. She is very well behaved out hunting but does not have the jump for Belvoir Saturday country and scope for big hedges which is a shame as she is bred to jump.

Today I tried to clip Zara. She was nervous of the clippers but with time and patience she eventually let me clip her. Over the next few weeks I will spend more time getting her accustomed to the clippers.

Zara has had a few weeks off as Julian and I have been very busy working for Paddock Barn Services so riding some of the horses had to come to a stop but Zara was the same as normal to ride. I think you could turn her away for six months and she would be the same.

The more we do with Zara the more that it comes clear that she always stays calm if she is out hunting or at home. She does have her quirks which is showjumping - it makes her rush which I don't think she will ever change but she ticks every other box so far.

Emma has started to Autumn hunt Zara. She is very well manered out hunting and will go anywhere in the field. We do put red tape on her tail as she will kick if anything comes really close. Emma also took Zara to Aylesford Cross Country which both horse and rider thoroughly enjoyed.
Summer Holidays
The summer holidays is always a struggle for me hence the lack of diary inserts so it was really nice when my neice came over from Ireland and hacked Zara out for me. Louise also got the chance to take Zara on hound exercise while I went on foot, leading Clara on her pony. We got left behind so I told louise to go and catch up with the others. Zara was so good, you can take her away from the field, canter her to catch up etc. I was really proud of this little mare as Louise has only been riding a year and only in a riding school so Zara really showed her the ropes. There are not many horses out there that you would let a novice take out with the hounds, canter away and bring back with a 12 year old young lady on board.

During July Zara has been up to Vale View to do some more show jumping (clear round jumping) as well as jumping her at home. The more show jumping we do with her the more she gets wound up trying to tackle them rahter than staying calm and listening so we took her to Newton XC Course, schooling over the cross country fences. Nothing seems to phase her and she jumped well, taking the fences in her stride. She was unsure of the water at first, which is expected, however after she had walked through it she was confident jumping into it. Showjumping just isnt for her, even though on the videos at the start of the year she looked she was enjoying herself but the more we seem to do she just rushes them.

Zara was a lot better jumping away from home. I know she is green in her show jumping but she just does not feel like she enjoys it. She has hunted all her life maybe, she just seems suited to jumping in the outdoors .

Over the last two weeks we have been jumping Zara over small show jumps, grids etc. and she does try to rush her fences at home. She seems to take them on too much and doesn't really look where she is going. We are going to take her to Vale View clear round jumping and see how she copes in a bigger arena.

Zara is very responsive to the leg when working on the flat and only needs the lightest of leg aids. She is cantering on both reins, serpentines, leg yeilding etc. She has a rocking horse canter - so smooth.

Over the past few weeks Zara has been doing her regular hacking and schooling. She does tend to go behind the contact sometimes on the flat but I think somebody has been strong with her in the past out hunting rather than putting in a stronger bit in and leaving her alone. She is starting to understand what leg is for on the flat and not just for going forward out hunting!
27/04/11
I have jumped Zara at home and she's forward going and not spooky in the slightest but needs time on the flat to help her with her balance around corners, especially on her right rein. I don't think she has ever worked on her right rein but she is a very willing and a very intelligent horse that just needs some time to develop. I'm really excited about this horse as she is just so lovely. Sorry there are no videos yet as I need a new camera but I will get one very soon.

So far Zara is proving to be such a lovely mare with a very easy going attitude to life. She has paces for dressage but I think she might event. She has had her back checked by our regular physio showing no problems. I will keep all her reports. Also she has had her teeth rasped which she needed - I don't think she has been checked a lot as she has very sharp teeth at the back so she is going to need sedating as she needs power tools to level her teeth. Just rasping won't work; I really dont think she has ever been checked. I have a detailed evaluation and maintenance chart to show any potential buyers in the future

We are finding Zara a very easy going mare. When out cantering she does not mind being out in front or behind for a novice rider you would find her easier to canter her in a straight bar pelham as she is light as a feather in this.

Zara is a confident horse out hacking. She has always been unfazed by tractors, arctic lorries, cars, prams, joggers and cyclists etc. but with bags blowing in hedges or cattle hiding behind a hedge she just needs to listen for a minute then she quietly carries on. She is just a gentle little lady who enjoys her hacking and cantering along tracks and fields. If she is ever in doubt of something you just let her look and stand if needs be and then she carries on as normal. I think somebody with a deep seat and independent hands could ride her comfortably in a happymouth straight bar out cantering but for novice riders she would just need a stronger bit in.

Over the past couple of weeks we have found that if Zara needs to look at something she is unsure about, she feels the need to turn away as she is waiting for us to tell her off for looking so if she is unsure we just let her stand and look and give her time, then she just walks on calmly. We want her to feel reasurred not hassled.

Zara is unfazed by traffic, she just keeps looking in gateways. I dont think she has seen so many!

Zara has been hacked out, mainly walking as she is unfit. She seems very easy going.
